About PHINZ

The Passive House Institute is an Incorporated Charitable Trust with the following aims:
Help us teach New Zealand how to design and build Passive Houses

  1. To advance education through:

    • Educating the building industry and members of the public about improved energy efficiency in New Zealand buildings;
    • Promoting the Passive House Standard as defined by the Passivhaus Institut, Darmstadt-Germany, and mandated by the European Parliament resolution of 31 January 2008 (2007/2106(INI)) in New Zealand;
    • Researching the performance of built Certified Passive Houses in New Zealand and making such research publicly available;
    • Researching the New Zealand housing industry in general and the New Zealand climate and making such research publicly available in order to promote energy efficient building options;
    • Providing a platform for the building sector to gain knowledge of highly energy efficient buildings;
    • Educating building professionals and lay persons about Certified Passive Houses.
  2. To benefit the community by:

    • Improving public health and well-being and relieving fuel poverty of the people of New Zealand through the promotion of healthy and highly energy efficient homes and public buildings;
    • Working with the public sector of New Zealand to improve the energy efficiency of New Zealand homes and public buildings.

Elrond Burrell

Chair
With over 20 years of experience, Elrond is an architect (UK registered) with expertise in Passive House, sustainable design, timber construction and environmental materials. He is also a keynote speaker, writer and advocate.

Guy Shaw

Treasurer
Guy is an architectural designer based in Wellington. He has worked extensively on Passive House projects in the UK.

Dr. Kara Rosemeier

Kara is the director of Passive House Academy New Zealand and has worked with Passive Houses in Europe. For her doctoral thesis, she researched indoor environmental quality of New Zealand houses.

Matthew Cutler-Welsh

Matthew has 10 years of experience leading residential energy efficiency projects, including nearly four years as Technical Manager for Homestar at the New Zealand Green Building Council.

Andrea Stocchero

Andrea is an Italian registered Architect with expertise in sustainability and energy efficiency. He is part of the Built Environment team at Scion, where he specialises in forestry and wood products research.

Paul Finch

Paul is a Chartered Building Engineer (MCABE C Build E) and Chartered Construction Manager (MCIOB) based in Christchurch
